Eligibility
All disciplines are eligible for participation; no prior French Language training is required.
Open to any person willing to acquire competences in French language, it will make you discover the French language and culture, but also, for intermediate and advanced levels, prepare for French university studies, by combining command of the language and progressive disciplinary immersion.

What is the program about?
This programme is a monthly intensive training course of 45 hours, based on French language learning covering all 6 levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). Open to any person willing to acquire competences in French language, it will make you discover the French language and culture, but also, for intermediate and advanced levels, prepare for French university studies, by combining command of the language and progressive disciplinary immersion.

Students will get 3 BSU credits.

Where does the program take place?
Chambery, France
Explore Chambéry, a gateway city to the French Alps, with its historical buildings, museums, pedestrian squares and streets with colorful café terraces. Although the city lies at the gateway to the French Alps, it benefits from the warmer climate of the plains and France's largest lakes. It is bordered on the north by Switzerland and on the east by Italy. Savoie is about three hours from Paris and the Mediterranean coast. Tourists enjoy the area for its quality of life, magnificent natural surroundings, history and heritage, and breath-taking Alpine and cross-country skiing and water sports. Chambéry was the capital of the former Duchy of Savoie. Like Annecy 50 kilometers away, it combines the charm of an old city with the vibrancy of a modern economy

Open since 1981 and recently integrated into the Savoie Mont Blanc University, ACCENTS is a center specialized in teaching French language and culture to non-French speaking foreigners. Courses are taught by qualified teachers of FLE, and offered throughout the academic year (September to April) and the months of May, June and July for 15 hours per week.

When does this program take place?
Summer Term: Approximately 3 weeks per term, with options in May and/or June and/or July

What is the program content?
45 Hours of French Language. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) includes 6 levels:
A1&2; B1&2, C1&2.
  • If you have no knowledge of French language at all, you will be automatically registered in the A1 level.
  • If you have already some knowledge of French language and if you have a diploma or certification to attest your level, you will be registered in the corresponding level.
  • If you have some knowledge of the French language, but you do not know exactly what your real level is, you will make a level test upon your arrival at the USMB and you will be registered in the corresponding level.
What is the student accommodation?
Students stay in single rooms in double apartments in a modern residence in downtown Chambéry. Meals are not included, but there is a kitchen in each apartment. The program coordinator helps students to find housing.

What is included?
45 hours of intensive French language training courses;
  • Access to cultural and sport activities organized by USMB for its international students (many activities are free of charge or at a low cost);
  • Access to the different university services: university library and restaurants, preventive medicine, etc.
Round-trip airfare, accommodation, meals and living expenses are paid out of pocket by the student but can be factored into the cost of attendance sheet for financial aid purposes. Other costs include US passport, HTH insurance, and spending money. In addition, the following fees will be paid to ACCENTS upon arrival:
  • Payment of the Contribution Student Life 91€
  • Insurance covering liability 16€
Is financial assistance available?
Students can apply for scholarships through the Rinker Center for Global Affairs. Information about these scholarships as well as the online scholarship application can be found on the Study Abroad website here.

In addition, students should consult with the Ball State University Financial Aid Office to determine available aid for this program.

Is a passport and visa required?
U.S. and non-U.S. citizens need a valid passport both to enter other countries and to return to the United States. If you already have a passport, make sure it is valid until at least six months after your return date. If you must apply for or renew a passport, APPLY EARLY, since a minimum of four to six weeks is usually required for processing. During peak travel seasons, more processing time is required. Passport forms are available at many federal and state courts, probate courts, some county/municipal offices and some post offices. They can also be downloaded from the Web.

All international students studying for over three months must apply for a student visa at the Campus France website http://www.usa.campusfrance.org/en to receive an appointment to apply in person at the French Consulate in Chicago. Your visa appointment must take place no more than 90 days before your departure to France.
