The KIIS Spring Semester program in Segovia provides an ideal setting for students to study Spanish and to absorb Spanish art, culture, and history. During this 13-week program, students take classes in the heart of Segovia and learn firsthand about daily life in Spain while living with a homestay family.
Only 60 miles north of Madrid, Segovia is an attractive provincial capital in the foothills of the Guadarrama Mountains. The city retains the strong, traditional character of Old Castile and has a visible history that dates back to pre-Roman times-- Segovia's world-renowned castles, aqueducts, museums and beautiful environs provide ample evidence. Segovia also offers a weekly open-air market, picturesque plazas and cafes, and beautiful architecture.
Homestays greatly enrich the student's language skills and understanding of Spanish customs and traditions. Students typically take part in host family activities, going to parties and outing, attending cultural and sporting events, and sometimes taking weekend trips together. The program affords students the opportunity to partake in Spanish holidays like Carnaval and Semana Santa. Not surprisingly, past participants often describe the unique homestay experience as a hallmark of their Segovia experience.
Students take classes five days a week and participate in a number of group excursions, including visits to Madrid, Salamanca, Avila, and Toledo. During open weekends and Spring Break, students are free to travel independently in Spain and beyond.
Segovia is also ideal for a semester study abroad program. All areas of the city are easily accessible without a car. Train and bus service is exceptional. The city offers a lively nightlife and varied cultural activities. The weather is pleasant and the congeniality of the Spanish people lend a spirit of cordial hospitality to the city. In short, students are warmly welcomed in Segovia and life there is low-cost and low-stress.
Please note: Students wishing to participate in the Segovia semester program must have at least 12 hours of college-level Spanish or the equivalent at time of departure. All Segovia courses (with the exception of the INT 450 Foreign Field Studies) are taught in Spanish and students are expected to speak Spanish at all times. Courses make use of local and regional resources and are taught by local Spanish faculty and the on-site Program Director.
