Announcements Alert: US Passport Processing Delays/Updates
Updates as of 1/10/22
As we prepare for a return to mobility, we must make you aware of a backlog in passport processing times. Failure to secure a passport will impact your ability to study abroad.
The State Department website advises of the following updates:
As of January 10, 2022 routine processing is 8 to 11 weeks and expedite processing (for an additional $60) is 5 to 7 weeks.
Processing times begin the day they receive your application at a passport agency or center, not the day you mail your application or apply for a passport at a local acceptance facility.
They are no longer using door-to-door timeframes to describe routine and expedited service.
Mail times vary across the country. Plan ahead and apply early.
It is also advised to select trackable mail: Send your application via USPS Priority Mail Express and pay an extra $17.56 for 1-2 day delivery of your completed passport. These services provide the fastest turnaround and protect your important documents
For programs requiring a student visa, you'll need your passport in hand months ahead of your actual departure date.
If you already have a passport, check the expiration date. Make sure it is valid for 6 months beyond the end date of your study abroad program or you will need to renew.
